'Tis the season to be jolly - Sage Christmas party

I had a great night last Friday. Sage had their Christmas party at St James Park and I was photographing the evening. All I can say is, they know how to throw a party! It was Heaven & Hell.

Liz & Sam's Wedding 23 October 2010

I used to work with Liz in a portrait studio in Gosforth. She is one of the best photographers I know so I was honoured to photography her wedding. It was also nice to catch up with old friends. She now teaches photography at Newcastle College. There were 3 or 4 photographers all shooting different parts of the day. The great thing for Liz and Sam was they got different styles of photography.

Thought I would post some shots from a recent wedding. I had loads of fun shooting this wedding as the couple and wedding guests where great! There were loads of kids at the wedding which always makes the day even more special with little kids running around having fun. And Just had a lovely review which I thought I would share.

Insurance Age Magazine

I was asked to take some photographs in Newcastle last week for the London based magazine Insurance Age. They have a round table event each month where leading figures from the insurance industry discuss different topics. This month was about the levels of talent in the industry and how the industry attracts it.

Here is another image with my new 50mm lens.

Prime Time

I got a new lens a few weeks ago but have just now had time to try it out.

For all the Gearheads out there it's a Nikon 50mm f1.4G. I forgot how nice it is to shoot with a prime lens. When you shoot with a fixed focal length you have to think about what you are shooting and move around your subject to get the best angle. I sometimes find with zoom lenses they can make you a bit lazy as you don't have to move around as much.

With a "standard" prime lens like a 50mm you get a very fast lens which is great for low light situations like "The First Dance" at a wedding. And when you shoot at wide apertures like f1.4 it really helps to isolate your subject from the background, great for portraits.

After shooting for 20 minutes or so you find it easier to visualise images because you become used to looking at the world though one field of view.  The image here is of my daughter Eliza Jewel Faulkner playing in our garden.
